Pat McGrath MatteTrance Lipstick Review

Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick seen through a prism glass

I saw that Pat McGrath Labs was having a sale and couldn’t help myself but purchase a couple things to finally try out the brand! I got the MatteTrance lipstick in Forbidden Love, a classic red. My review is below:

Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick Product Information

According to the brand, this lipstick touts the following:

  • Creamy Matte Texture
  • One-Swipe Coverage
  • Ultra-Vivid Colour
  • Oil-Infused Powder
  • Weightless, Cushiony Feel
  • Flexible and Adherent

Usage Review and Thoughts

Application:

The lipstick applies matte but is non-drying. My lips didn’t flake at all after a couple hours, which honestly can’t be said for many lipsticks. For a bullet, matte lipstick, it’s better than a lot of balm-type products out there! I was super impressed by that.

Texture:

The lipstick formula is powder based, so when applying, it almost reminded me of sand—but without being abrasive at all. It’s just what came to my mind when trying to describe how it felt.

Colors:

It pigments really well. This swatch is all in one swipe. Photo taken under overcast daylight.

How it wears:

The lipstick seems to feather a bit over the day, so I think perhaps it needs to be used with a lip liner as per recommended on their website.

They also recommended wearing it with setting powder. While I’m not expecting it to be transfer-proof, I usually wear my lipsticks without so many steps day to day—so that’s how I did my wear test for this. And without any additional products, this lipstick unfortunately transfers very easily. I couldn’t eat without the color getting absolutely everywhere.

Conclusion

In my opinion, the Pat McGrath MatteTrance lipstick is a fantastic glam/editorial lipstick that is perfect for photography, filming, and events. The rich depth of color is stunning, and I love how it doesn’t cause my lips to be flakey despite being a matte formula, which is a great highlight.

For long-wearing and work days, I would personally prefer something that doesn’t transfer as easily and is more low maintenance, for example the Chanel‘s Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue, or La Bouche Rouge’s Matte Lipstick

All in all, this lipstick does all it says on the box but definitely has its limitations. I’ll enjoy figuring out the best occasions to wear this. But let’s be real, we are absolutely here for the fire packaging and design!

Shop Pat McGrath MatteTrance Lipstick

In terms of the best place to buy Pat McGrath makeup, her official website is fantastic because it has an Xclusiv Offers section, where they sometimes offer really good deals for some of her products.

I would recommend keeping an eye out to see what good stuff pop up since her products aren’t cheap and you could potentially find a good discount on some items.

If you don’t want to wait for a sale, then I would recommend purchasing from any of the reputable retailers below:
