Sonia G. Eye and Face Brushes Review

It took a while but I finally managed to compile a review for my Sonia G brushes!

When I first learned makeup many years ago—back when people still physically went to classes, because Youtube beauty wasn’t yet a thing—one of the biggest challenges I had was that I found eyeshadows difficult to use.

This was usually due to two main reasons: low quality formulas with poor blendability and heavy fallouts, and poor quality brushes that do not pick up, blend, or suit eye shapes as well as good brushes do.

After over a decade of not touching makeup seriously and coming back into it again a few years ago—one way or another, I got into a fude rabbit hole, and eventually discovered Sonia G’s brushes.

Sonia G. started with a blog, Sweet Makeup Temptations. On her website, she reviewed brushes extensively and had insightful reads and comparisons between 2000+ brushes in her personal collection. When she ventured into making her own brush line, reviews on Reddit were generally positive, so I decided to get a few pieces, my review is below:

Sonia G. Makeup Brushes

Sonia G brushes are crafted in Japan and sold exclusively on Beautylish. There is a handy Sonia G. Brush Guide that gives you an overview of her different brushes, dimensions, and recommended uses. There is also a personal profile about her brushes and background that makes a nice read.

I wanted to focus on upgrading my eyeshadow brushes but also try to get a new face and cheek brush, so I got the following:

Pencil Pro, Mini Booster, Classic Cheek, Master Face, Flat Definer, Builder Pro, Crease Two, Worker Two

I was really excited to get these, and started my initial documentation to compare how her brushes did versus the free brush I had from my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette that I was planning to get rid of. I will go over each of the brushes below.

Sonia G. Builder Pro Review

Builder Pro is a flat eye brush with dyed saikoho goat hair. It’s recommended for packing on and building up intensity of powder eye shadows.

This swatch is between the Builder Pro and Urban Decay’s palette brush as they are similar in size.

You can see the eyeshadow powder kicked up in a halo around where Urban Decay brush was used here, while around the Sonia G Builder Pro it had minimal fallout.

All of Sonia G’s eye makeup brushes blended and applied super well like this for me.

Sonia G. Crease Two vs Mini Booster Review

Both the Crease Two and Mini Booster are crease brushes.

I bought the Crease Two first and LOVED that brush. But it was just slightly large for my Asian eyes, so when someone in my IG post recommended the Mini Booster, I went and got that right away.

Both of these brushes pick up and put down colors crazy well. The only difference is the size, and I tend to lean towards the Mini Booster most of the time now just because I don’t need as much product in a large area for day-wear.

It blends around my non-existent crease and gives it a nice shape without me having to work for it at all. My eyeshadow time basically takes 2 minutes these days thanks to these brushes. I know I’m a lazy person and want my makeup process to be quick, so this seriously just works so well for me in every way.

Sonia G. Worker Two Review

The Worker Two is an eye blending brush for shading and blending cream or liquid eye shadow.

This brush blends beautifully, but the size of is huge on my eyes! So I can really only use it for large placements areas like highlights.

Sonia G. Flat Definer Review

The Flat Definer is a flat pencil brush for shading and smudging powder eyeshadow.

I saw Sonia mention this as one of her favorite brushes so I picked it up.

It’s not as dense and stiff as the smaller Urban Decay brush I had, so the line it makes isn’t as dark.

The UD brush still kicked up eyeshadow everywhere though so I didn’t want to use it.

I think maybe because my Asian eyes aren’t that big, it’s possible that I needed a slightly smaller brush here for really dense brush liner. I tend to use this for soft lining looks now and it works well.

Sonia G. Classic Cheek Review

I was really in love Patrick Ta’s blushes, but it was hard to find synthetic brushes that worked well and weren’t overly prickly.

With how soft Sonia G’s eye brushes were, I figured I can give the Classic Cheek a shot, as she said even though it was a natural hair brush, this would work with cream products. I was looking forward to it and I’m not sure if I might have gotten a dud, but the brush shed the first time I put it to the pan. And the biggest issue for me was unfortunately it was prickly and wasn’t as soft as I had hoped.

The upside is that it does allow you to build up colors very beautifully. In the end I returned it because of the shedding and prickliness. But if your face is not super sensitive, this is still a cheek brush worth checking out imo. It really does apply colors very beautifully.

Sonia G. Master Face Review

Similar to the Classic Cheek, this wasn’t as soft as I hoped for. It was barely softer than the synthetic powder brush I have from La Bouche Rouge, which had a denser head but was not prickly at all. The reason I wanted a new brush was for a slightly different size and something less dense, and I feel that this was disappointing in that aspect.

If I had to rate softness and comfort, with 0 being stiff and prickly and 10 being soft and gentle, I’d rate Sonia G’s crease brushes at 9/10, denser brushes at 7.5/10, and the Classic Cheek and Master Face at 5.5/10.

Not all brushes should be soft, but both the Classic Cheek and Master Face were definitely a bit more prickly than I expected. Although to be very fair, I’ve learned that there is just a limit to how soft saikoho goat hair can be, so that’s probably just the limits of the material and I unfortunately expected too much on that front.

Sonia G. Pencil Pro Review

Did not expect it at all but ended up loving with this brush! It doesn’t have the hard definition of the Flat Definer, but it’s still tightly packed and is the perfect brush for smoking out my bottom lid for a smokey eye.

Combined with the mini booster or Crease Two, these two brushes can basically do the job of an entire smoky eye without me needing anything else. Used with the Flat Definer and Mini Booster, they make an incredibly strong set of essential eye brushes.

Best Sonia G Eye Makeup Brushes and Swatches

Amongst this batch of brushes, my favorites ended up being the following:

• Crease Two: great for doing a large shadow around my eyes and for blending things out. Follows my eye shape really well

• Mini Booster: great for more natural makeup creases

• Pencil Pro: for smoking out lower lid in a smokey eye

• Flat Definer: for darker shadows closer to lash line

I’ve been considering getting the Crease Pro as the size is an in between of the Crease Two and Mini Booster, if it works out right, it might replace those two for me and a standard eye look for me could need very few brushes altogether. I will report back!

Eye Makeup Look Using Sonia G Brushes

With just a few swipes of the Crease Two and Flat Definer, I had most of this look done. Takes only a minute or two.

The Crease Two follows the shape of my eyes so well that I don’t need to think hard about brush control and powder placements. The Mini Booster being a smaller version of the Crease Two, is more suited for more day-time/natural eyeshadow for me when I don’t want to apply too much product to a large area.

Because of the ease of using these brushes and how hard it is to go wrong, I find these brushes to be super beginner friendly, and I would recommend them to everyone for that.
